Autism

Autism is among a group of disorders that are known as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs).  These are developmental disabilities which create significant impairments in the ability for social interaction and communication and that are characterized by unusual behaviors and interests.  The ways in which ASDs affect person’s learning and reaction to varied sensations can be categorized as exceptional and unusual.  In other areas of learning and interaction, those suffering from autism experience different skill levels that can range from gifted to severely challenged.

The onset of ASD begins typically before the age of three.  Some parents are keen to the symptoms of autism and seek treatment for their child.  In other cases, doctors notice the telltale signs of autism and pass this information along to parents.  In any case, by the time children reach school age the differences from their peers are generally very apparent.  Coping with autism is a condition that will span the entire lifetime of an individual diagnosed with this disorder.  Luckily, a growing number of these individuals find they are able to lead seemingly normal lives in face of this usually crippling disorder.  Autism is listed as one of the most heritable complex genetic disorders among those in the psychiatry field.

The Autism Spectrum Disorder group includes Autistic Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and Asperger Syndrome.  Although many of the same symptoms occur in each of these group types, there are differences and distinctions drawn between them as it pertains to when the symptoms begin the severity of the symptoms, and the precise nature of the symptoms.

Detection of ASDs can be as early as 1 ½ years of age.  Services eligibility for children under the age of three that are at risk for serious developmental delays are eligible for services under the IDEA Act.  PWC Medicaid also ensures reimbursable services for eligible children up to age 19.  Consultation with psychiatrists and personal doctors is vital in not only learning the nature of autism and related disorders, but also, finding support for the victims of this disorder is available through these professionals.

It is important to recognize and to reach out to the help available for you and your children with autism.  More information regarding autism, treatments, and eligible services can be provided by contacting a qualified professional psychiatrists.

The prevalence of autism in children ages 3 to 10 is estimated to be about 3.4 cases per 1000 children. If you think your child demonstrates autism symptoms, contact a qualified psychiatrist.
