Antidepressant Medication

Antidepressants aid the brain by making neurotransmitters more accessible to the brain.  The brains of patients who suffer from depression have trouble absorbing certain neurotransmitters.  Antidepressants help the brain make better use of these neurotransmitter chemicals.  Commonly, antidepressants help a vast number of patients with a whole host of conditions, diseases, and disorders.  Commonly treated medical conditions by antidepressants include headache, lethargy, attention span difficulties, eating disorders, substance abuse or dependence, insomnia, somnolence, anxiety, panic attacks, stress, and  social discomfort.

BR>Survey results vary; however, figures tend to lean towards the statistic that nearly one tenth of the American population takes some form of anti-depressant medication on the recommendation of their medical doctor.  For patients, the pharmaceutical effects are noticeable immediately upon starting the medications in most cases.  These may include some alleviation of depression or other symptoms, but the side effects of the medicine are noticed in a few days.  The actual symptoms will not respond to the medication for two to four weeks after the start of your regimen, but at this time, the majority of patients note a massive improvement in their depression or other ailment.  Noting this timeframe is important, because many patients unfamiliar with these medications feel they are not working and stop taking the medicine, thus inhibiting any possible progress.

Antidepressants are divided up depending on which chemicals they affect.  There are several different kinds of antidepressants.  The group of medicines that has the least severe side effects is called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRIs and includes such brand names like Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft.  Tricyclics are another group of medicines that have side effects that are more common.  The side effects include difficulty urinating, aggravation of glaucoma, and impaired thinking.

These include medications such as Elavil, Norpramin, and Pamelor.  Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors or SNRIs can cause sexual problems, an increased heart rate, as well as an increase in cholesterol levels.  These medications include Effexor and Cymbalta.  Other groups of medications include Norepinephrine and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors or NDRIs, Combined Reuptake Inhibitors and Receptor Blockers or CRIRBs, and Monamine Oxidase Inhibitors or MAOIs.  MAOIs are the group that offers the most risk of severe side effects or harmful drug interaction so they are used less often than other drugs.
